Hindu Marriage Registration in India -Step by Step Guide

Marriages are said to be made in heaven but in India it is important to get the marriage registered in order to get legal certification. Any person in India is bound to get his/her marriage registration under the given law as per the verdict of the Supreme Court of India.

Why registration is compulsory

The marriage registration has been made mandatory under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 or the Special Marriage Act of 1954. This authenticates the marriage and makes it legally certified. The unregistered marriages are not considered to be invalid or void in India but registration is always preferred. There are various reasons due to which registration of marriage has been made mandatory in India.

Some of the reasons are as followings:

  1. To keep a check on any fraudulent marriages
  2. To keep a strict vigil on child marriages
  3. To help get the person his or her rights in case of any dispute in the marriage
  4. To easily avail some facilities and get documents like passport, life insurance policies, opening bank accounts etc

How can the registration be done?

Marriage registration is not a very cumbersome procedure. It simply requires the married couple to apply for the registration by putting up an application. For registering the marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act there are certain set of documents which are required, these are as follows:

  1. Signed application by both applicants
  2. Address Proof can be shown by any of the following documents: Adhaar Card, Ration Card, Voter ID, Passport, and License
  3. Birth Date proof of both Husband and wife
  4. Passport size photographs 2 each, 1 photograph of the marriage
  5. Marriage affidavit to be submitted by both the applicants separately
  6. Marriage invitation card from both the parties

All these documents should be duly signed and self-attested by the applicants and then the documents are subsequently submitted to the concerned officer.

Marriage registration also can be done online by going through the website. After that, you can select the district and fill in the required details. After filling in all the details the application can be submitted, post that a provisional number is allotted that is printed on the acknowledgment slip and the application process is complete. The printout of this can be then presented when the appointment is fixed.

Appoint

Under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, the appointment is to give within 15 days of online registration and any person who has attended the marriage can be the witness. The witness must carry a proof of residence and a PAN card. In the case of a Hindu Marriage Act, a fee of Rs. 100/- is applicable which is to be deposited to the cashier of the district.
