Spotlight On Neeraj Chopra As He Competes For First Time As Diamond League Champion

Contending for the first time as Diamond League champion, star pikestaff venture Neeraj Chopra will be over against his familiar nemeses in the first leg of the prestigious meetings series on Friday, as he aims to begin a’ long’ season speckled with a strong performance. The 25- time-old Chopra, also a 2022 World Crowns tableware winner, faces the likes of reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada and Tokyo Olympics tableware quarterfinalist Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic in a star- speckled field at the Qatar Sports Club.

Chopra, who has a particular stylish and public record of89.94 m, had finished fourth with87.43 m in 2018 in the only other participation in the Doha Diamond League. He couldn’t take part then last time due to lack of” overall fitness and strength”.

Despite missing the Doha leg, Chopra went on to script history one after the other last time. He came the first Indian Diamond League champion after winning the 2022 grand homestretch in Zurich in September. A month before that, he came the first Indian to win a Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne.

Chopra last month said that he was feeling better” physically and technically” at the matching point in time, but it’ll not be easy for him to win the top prize in the season- opening Diamond League then, going by the inconceivable competition seen then last time.

Peters had produced the fifth-longest gamble in history by hurling the shaft to93.07 m, a mark just outside German Thomas Rohler's93.90 m, a meeting record set in 2017.

Vadlejch, who finished second behind Chopra in Tokyo Olympics and won a citation in the 2022 World Crowns, also recorded a particular of90.88 m then last time in his first ever throw over 90m.

Alongside the decorated triad, the Doha Meeting will also have European champion Julian Weber of Germany, who has a particular stylish of89.54 m, 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott( PB90.16 m) of Trinidad & Tobago and former world champion and 2016 Olympic tableware quarterfinalist Julius Yego( PB92.72 m) of Kenya.

” This is my first competition of the season. It’s always good when you have great challengers,” Chopra said at thepre-event press conference.

” Vadlejch has formerly thrown88.38 m in Potchefstroom( South Africa, on April 18), so I suppose hereafter will see great competition. Also, Doha is notorious for 90m throws. So we will see, hopefully hereafter will have great results for all.” One of the targets for Chopra, the first Indian Olympic gold quarterfinalist in track and field, this time will be to cross the 90m mark, the gold standard in the world of pikestaff, but whether he can achieve the feat in his first competition of the season remains to be seen.

Last month, he said he’d also be looking to cross the coveted mark this time, though he’s not putting himself under pressure to achieve the feat.

” Last time, I was just 6 cm short of 90m. I hope to do it this time but I’ll not put any pressure on myself. It’s a magical mark and 90m club is notorious in world of pikestaff. I hope to enter it this time,” Chopra had said.

The Doha match will also see 2022 Commonwealth Games triadic jump champion Eldhose Paul contend in a field, which includes Tokyo Olympic champion Pedro Pichardo( PB18.08 m)) of Portugal, reigning Diamond League winner Andy Diaz Hernandez(17.07 m) of Cuba and two- time Olympic gold winner( 2012 and 2016) and five- time world champion Christian Taylor( PB18.21 m) of USA.

With a particular stylish of16.99 m, it’ll be delicate for Paul to be on the tribune in a top- class field. He’d won gold in the Birmingham CWG with a wind- supported trouble of17.03m.

The Diamond League is track and field’s most prestigious series sitting in the top league of World Athletics’ one- day competitions. The 2023 Diamond League comprises 13 meetings, starting with the Doha event leading up to the two- day Diamond League Final in Eugene, USA, on September 16- 17.

India beat Australia by 99 runs (DLS), take 2-0 lead in series

India thrashed Australia by 99 runs via the DLS method in the the second one-day international of the three-match series at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday. With the win, India have wrapped up the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

IND vs AUS 2nd ODI Highlights

Australia were set a revised target of 317 in 33 overs after rain disrupted proceedings. Chasing India’s mammoth 399, Australia were 56/2 with as many as 11 overs lost due to the rain disruption.

It was the second instance in which rain had interrupted play during India’s innings as well when the hosts were at 79 for one in 9.5 overs.

Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets each.

Australia lost two wickets for just nine runs and were 56-2 when rain interrupted play for over an hour.

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne attempted to rebuild in their stand of 80 but the wheels came off the chase after departure.

Ashwin broke through the stand and then struck twice in one over to send back the left-handed Warner and Josh Inglis.

Abbott led an unexpected charge with his 36-ball 54 as Green attempted to hit back but was run out.

Number eight Abbott was put on a ninth-wicket stand of 77 with Josh Hazlewood making 23.

Earlier, Shubman Gill continued his sensational run with a fifth ODI hundred of the year while Shreyas Iyer struck a timely turn under pressure to fire India to a record 399 for five against Australia in the second game here on Sunday.

Gill (104 off 97 balls) and Iyer (105 off 90 balls) shared a stroke-filled 200-run stand off 164 balls after Ruturaj Gaikwad (8) missed on a batting beauty.

Suryakumar Yadav (72 not out off 37 balls) and skipper KL Rahul (52 off 38 balls) plundered a pedestrian looking Australian attack in the death overs to provide India with the final flourish.

The last 10 overs produced 103 runs as India racked up their highest-ever total against Australia in ODIs.

The Holkar Stadium tends to produce high-scoring games and Sunday’s game proved to be no exception.

Gill’s peerless form is an ominous reminder to rivals ahead of next month’s World Cup.

It was the second consecutive ODI hundred for the 24-year-old at this venue, having hammered 112 off 78 balls against New Zealand earlier this year when India ended with a match-winning 395.

Unlike Year, Gill started slowly on Sunday, collecting nine off his first 19 balls before going after the Aussie bowlers with disdain.

He was unstoppable following his first strike which was a straight six off pacer Sean Abbott in the ninth over.

Cameron Green tried a short one against Gill who was delighted to pull him away for a six over fine leg. However, the rain caused a 40-minute delay, putting a temporary halt to the entertainment.

Both Gill and Iyer, who struggled with cramps towards the end of his innings, continued to find boundaries following resumption.

The highlight of Gill’s knock was how often he danced down the track against the fast bowlers while Iyer’s aggressive intent from ball one stood out in a scenario where he was desperately searching for runs.

Both Iyer and Gill hit their half-centuries with straight sixes, off debutant Spencer Johnson and Green respectively.

Conditions were ideal for the batters but Australia’s attack, missing the likes of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, looked short on ideas. Lead spinner Adam Zampa couldn’t stem the flow of runs either.

Yesterday was the first to complete the century, his third in ODIs, while Gill got to the milestone, his sixth in the format, 19 balls later.

Rahul and Kishan (31 off 18) played some bold strokes to up the scoring rate.

Suryakumar, who had to modify his game in the previous match to adapt to the needs of ODI cricket, came out to bat in the 41st over.

In the context of the T20, it was an ideal time for him to come and explore his 360 range from ball one. He did just that powering India to a formidable total.

His innings included four sixes in succession off Green in the 44th over. The towering pacer conceded 103 runs in his 10 overs, so symbolic of their wretched outing on the day.

Trailing 0-1 in the series. The final ODI is scheduled for Wednesday in Rajkot.
